  2. Foreign objects in the Eye - Introduction What are foreign objects in the eye? A foreign object in your eye is anything that comes into contact with your eyeball from outside of your body. It could be under your eyelid, stuck on the surface of your eye, or even pass through your eye. It could be anything from dust particles to metal shards.

  3. Foreign objects in the Eye – Symptoms If a foreign object is present in the eye, it is likely to cause immediate symptoms. These may include: • A sense of pressure or discomfort • A feeling that something is in the eye • Eye pain • Extreme tearing • Light sensitivity • Excessive blinking • Redness • A bloodshot eye.

  4. Foreign objects in the Eye – Action to be taken If you get a foreign object in your eye: • Wash your hands first. • Flush out the object with clean water or a saline solution. • Use an eye-point or a small, clear glass of water to flush out the foreign object. The glass should be positioned with the rim of the glass touching the bone at the bottom of the eye socket. • Get into the shower and aim a warm, lukewarm stream of water at the affected eye, holding the eyelid open.

  5. Foreign objects in the Eye – Action to be taken To help someone else: • Wash your hands. • Sit the patient in a comfortable, well-lit area. • Gently inspect the eye to locate the object. • Pull the lower eyelid down, ask the patient to look up, then hold the upper eyelid while the patient looks down. • If the object is stuck in the tear covering on the eye surface, flush it out with a saline-filled medicine dropper or with lukewarm, clean water. • If you don’t have a dropper, use a water glass or hold the patient’s head under a soft stream of water.

  6. Foreign objects in the Eye – Caution Caution :- • It is advised to refrain from attempting to remove any objects that are embedded in the eye, as well as to refrain from rubbing the eye. • Additionally, it is not recommended to attempt to remove any large objects that impede the ability to close the eye.

  7. Foreign objects in the Eye – When to see a doctor When to call for medical help:- • It is not possible to remove the object, as it is embedded within the eyeball. • Additionally, the individual with the object in their eye is likely to experience abnormal vision. • Furthermore, pain, redness or an object sensation in the eye may persist after the removal of the object.
