  1. 5 Common Forklift for Hire Questions Answered When you look into forklifts for hire for the first time, it can be difficult to understand how to proceed. There are many different types of forklifts available and finding the right one to suit your needs can be a real challenge. Here at Access Hire, we can help with that process to ensure that your company has a forklift that will help you to progress. We often get asked about forklift training for employees, so we have put together a list of five common questions and the answers to them. 1. Should a Forklift Have a Seatbelt? The short answer to this question is yes, and the majority of forklift manufacturers have included this safety feature since the early 90’s. The wearing of seatbelts should always be encouraged in any line of work and driving a forklift is no different. If your employees are not wearing their seatbelts, this could affect your insurance coverage, so it’s a good idea to promote this whenever possible. 2. Should a Forklift Have a Reversing Alarm? Surprisingly, a reversing alarm is not a legal requirement, but it should definitely be considered as such by any company concerned with safety at work. If the forklift operator cannot see behind them, it can be very dangerous, and even a low speed collision could result in a fatality. The forklift may have a factory fitted alarm, and this should not be altered or removed for any reason. 3. Should a Forklift Have a Horn? It’s a legal requirement for a forklift to be equipped with a horn to produce a warning. The horn must be audible and in good working condition at any time when the forklift

  2. is operating. If your forklift has a non-functioning horn, it will be dangerous for the operator and other employees working in the same area. 4. Should a Forklift Have Headlights? This is not a legal requirement unless the forklift is going to be used in an area where the lighting conditions are too dark for the operator to see. In the vast majority of cases, a change in lighting will be enough to solve any visibility issue or your premises. If the forklift is being used to load or unload outside or during a night shift it may be a good idea to get headlights fitted to your forklift. 5. Should a Forklift Have a Fire Extinguisher? A fire extinguisher is not required under any specific safety regulations. However, your specific company policy may require that each forklift has an extinguisher installed. As an example: if your business was involved in the chemical industry or you need to move flammable materials, installing a fire extinguisher would be highly recommended. Hopefully, these five answers will help you to understand, choose and use the right forklift for your business. If you’re thinking about a forklift for hire to use in your business get in touch with Access Hire Australia, we are experts in forklift rental, and we will be happy to help.
