  2. An event that happened in 1820 By this time more than 20,000 Indians live in virtual slavery on the California missions.

  4. An event that happened in 1822 President Monroe warns of armed reprisals if Russians attempt to establish a physical presence on lands claimed by the united states in the pacific northwest.

  5. An event that happened in 1823 President James Monroe proclaims the” Monroe doctrine” against European intervention in the Americas.

  6. An event that happened in 1824 The bureau of Indian affairs is established within the war department with a primary duty to regulate and settle disputes arising from trade with Indian tribes.

  13. The other person that influenced the 1820’s is Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson was a military governor of Florida [1821] Jackson resigned from the senate in October 1825 and was president from 1829-1837

  23. Family life during the 1820’s • Most Americans still lived and worked on independent farms, where the mother and children played a crucial role in earning the family’s living. Women could not vote women became divorced from the out side world women needed to be protected from its temptations and evils. Men caused all of this. women gained more authority over their children and a larger role in running the household.

Women's Fashions, trends, word phrases in 1820-1829 • During the first half of the 1820’s there were slight gradual modifications of regency styles, with the position of the waistline trending successively lower than the high waist line of the regency. • During the second half of the 1820’s the fashion was the rightmost outfit, with its smaller , shorter sleeves, non- whitish color scheme, and slightly lower neckline, is the evening dress.

  25. Men’s fashions trends and word phrases 1820-1829 • By the mid-1820s,men’s fashion plates show a shapely ideal silhouette with broad shoulders emphasized with puffs at the sleeve head , a narrow waist , and very curvy hips.

The Worst Thing in 1820-1829 • May 19 1828- Congress passed the tariff of abominations, which taxed imported manufactured goods in an attempt to protect northern industry, leading to the nullification crisis. South Carolina, upset by the harshness of a tariff that placed a 62 percent tax on over 90 percent of imported goods, claimed a right to nullify federal laws if it deemed them unconstitutional.

  28. The Worst Thing in 1820-1829 (cont.) • The state threatened secession if the federal government attempted to enforce the tariff. The state mobilized 25,000 troops and was on the brink of war with the united states before a compromise tariff was passed in early 1833.

  29. Wars in the 1820’s • 1820-1823 Africa naval units raided the slave traffic pursuant to the 1819 act of Congress. • 1822 Cuba united states navel forces suppressing piracy landed on the northwest coast of Cuba and burned a pirate.

  30. Wars in the 1820’s (cont.) • 1823 Cuba. Brief landings in pursuit of pirates occurred April 8 near Escondio ;April 16 near Cayo Blanco ; July 11 at Siquapa Bay ; July 21 at Cape Cruz ; and October 23 at Camrioca. • 1824 Cuba. In October the landed bluejackets near Mantanzas in pursuit of pirate. This was during the cruise authorized in 1822

  31. Wars in 1820’s (cont.) • 1824 Puerto Rico. Commodore David porter with a landing party attacked the town of Fajardo which had sheltered pirates and insulted American navel officers. He landed with 200 men in November and forced an apology. Commodore porter was later court –martialed for overstepping his powers.

  32. Wars in 1820’s (cont.) • 1825 Cuba. In March cooperating American and British forces landed at Sagua La Grande to capture pirates. • 1827 Greece. In October and November landing parties hunted pirates on the Mediterranean islands of Argenteire , Myconos , and Andros.
